As local journalism declines, government officials conduct themselves with less integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness, and corporate malfeasance goes unchecked
"Losing the News" PEN America, November 20, 2019
Historically, the Ukrainian local media landscape has not been vibrant and competitive. With a few exceptions, most regions of the country are filled with what technically can be called "news deserts", i.e. local communities having no access to objective news journalism about their region.

CORE is a brand new initiative of unprecedented scale. Not only we would like to help the existing local publishers bring their operations and sustainability to a totally different level, but also to catalyze new local media projects and ventures. There is a generation of new local media leaders and we want to help them prosper in the new digital-first and audience-first environment.
What we are doing
There are four key components of what we are doing:
CORE Sustainable Growth Program
year-long program combining four modules of trainings and individual mentorship
ARK

communications agency creating and launching brands with the help of native advertising
CORE
Publisher Services
professional media consulting services
CORE
Media Community
unique hub for media experts and journalists
CORE Sustainable Growth Program
aims to help independent media become sustainable by developing business skills, forming strategic plans as well as reviewing and optimizing their organizational structures, improving newsroom management through tech innovations and KPIs, maintaining the best mentors expertise in the region, connecting them with partners within the private and donor sector and providing funding for project implementation and mentors' support to launch/ scale independent, sustainable media ecosystem with strong ethical and professional standards of journalism.
ARK
connects organizations and brands with national and local independent publishers. We bring top-notch expertise in sales, communications and native advertising practices to create meaningful multi-channel communications strategies while driving monetization and strategic partnerships for independent publishers at scale. We help our customers implement their communication tasks while actually contributing to the development of independent high-quality journalism at the same time.
CORE Publisher Services
works with publishers and companies in need of media expertise. Our vast network of media experts can launch new products, create efficient editorial and distribution strategies, audit monetization and management practices or carry out complete digital transformation of your organization. When the training is done and the media has all the basic business skills and a development strategy, certain bottlenecks may remain buried deep within processes and structure. CORE Publisher Services resolves such issues.
CORE Media Community
is a hub for top professionals across media, marketing and tech that aims to drive conversation around the future of media in Ukraine, EaP, CEE and globally. We host regular events for the community and plan to roll out more products soon. Journalism has not yet been as threatened as it is now, the current crisis and disruption could finally finish off the high-quality journalism, if media professionals fail to confront the common threats together. We joined efforts to find new ideas and solutions from distribution strategies to global investigations via our events, meetups, podcasts, newsletters and of course media platforms.
Projects we worked on:
Media: "20 minutes. Vinnytsia"
RIA Media is the largest Ukrainian regional publishing group. The group's main platform, the online website "20 minutes", covers more than three million readers. The company employs over 250 professionals. The organization is financially profitable and has an independent editorial policy.

The group joined the Media Manager Academy in 2019. Among the products that RIA has developed with the support of MDF is the first regional subscription system. Together with the mentors of the program, we chose the type of soft metered paywall, developed a launch strategy and selected a stack of tools.

The subscription was launched on October 22. The first hundred subscriptions were collected in two weeks. We expect to reach 3,000 active subscribers in the first year.

We are currently working with MDF on further product development and improving the quality of journalism.

Media: "CUKR" (Sumy)
"CUKR" is an online magazine of the city of Sumy, founded in early 2019 as a lifestyle media outlet. The newsroom brings together about 10 team members, together with freelance authors. The site has an average of 40,000 to 60,000 page views per month, about 8,000 followers on social networks, and its articles have been read more than 600,000 times since it was founded.

"CUKR" took part in the Media Manager Academy accelerator in 2019. In the year after studying at the Academy, the site's performance in search engines increased by 200%. In fact, the share of organic search traffic has increased from 7 to 20% and continues to grow.

The site underwent redesigning, adjusted functionality, operating speed indicators have been improved. The site was also adapted for use by mobile devices. "CUKR" launched new directions of activity and projects that helped grow the audience and go beyond text stories, and tried various forms of cooperation with business. Today, as an alternative to the not very convenient and expensive Patreon platform, we have developed a payment system through LiqPay - now all donations are collected and administered by the relevant public organization.

We tested the news formats on the site: video podcasts, event broadcasts, and held our own events as well. We explored our audience and actively sought opportunities to be useful during the pandemic. Also, financial support of MDF within the program allowed us to focus on the quality of the content and its efficiency.

Media: 6262.com.ua (Слов'янськ)
6262.com.ua is a news website of the city of Slavyansk. This media is an important source of information for the city and the region. It is profitable, works according to journalism standards and is independent of political influences.

The media was a participant in the 2018-2019 accelerator. The whole accelerator was built as a business school. All classes had a clear plan and after each lesson it was possible to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. In general, all trainings and lectures were a set of successful practices. This approach to the development of media organizations is now the most relevant.

As a result, we launched an adapted organization management system, monitoring and control of the tasks set, new types of monetization, well-established communication processes within the team. We now have the ability to scale 6262.com.ua as media outlet.

Media: STS (Sumy)
STS (Social Television of Sumy Region) is the largest media in the Sumy region, which includes cable broadcasting, a website, a YouTube channel and profiles on Facebook and Instagram. The state employs 25 people and 3 freelancers.

Within the accelerator the team of STS managed to launch the project "STS for Business". As a result, the channel's revenues increased by 25% compared to the same period last year. This was achieved by increasing the number of contractors, establishing connections with advertising agencies, which allowed to attract companies such as MHP, PrivatBank and others.

The channel's audience has increased by 25-30% - on average, 140,000 unique users visit the STS website per month. The channel also launched monetization of YouTube, began rebranding and updating the site, implemented a KPI system for employees and improved its products, offered new advertising integrations.

We began to understand business better, relationships with partners improved, and "one-time" clients became regular. As a result, this ensured financial stability of the media.

Media: Rayon.in.ua
The company defined the main problem as the lack of a sales department system and the image of a reliable partner among advertisers. As a result of cooperation with MDF, Rayon.in.ua increased revenues by 23% and hired 3 employees: director of advertising sales, anchorman, smm-manager.

The network also redesigned its brand and websites. It also expanded the network of partners among local businesses (9 new partnerships). Media has rearranged management processes. The motivation system for employees was changed, in particular for journalists and the sales department.

Also, the concept of the offline event West Media Forum was completely changed, thanks to which it was possible to strengthen the brand Rayon.in.ua among national and regional advertisers. As part of the Accelerator, we have implemented programmatic advertising on the site.

Media: KYKY.org (Minsk, Belarus)
KYKY.org the most popular lifestyle media of Belarus.

The main problems for this media were defined as outdated advertising methods and negative P&L balance. As a result of cooperation with MDF, KYKY.org launched the native advertising department, hired two new sales managers and created new formats of ads.

They include programmatic advertising, new native articles formats that are more expensive and engage readers more deeply. The team is currently optimising the operational processes. As a result, the number of advertisers, especially international brands, has increased. For media, a media kit was developed https://projects.kyky.org.

The site design was updated, and a new mobile version was launched.

Local news organizations strengthen democracy by boosting local involvement in cities and towns, helping to hold officials accountable, and reducing citizens' partisan polarization. In their stead, a network of "pink slime" propaganda outlets has taken advantage of the gaps left behind, replacing local news outlets with deceptive and manipulative media.
